Common questions

The moon is not in my menu bar

Sleep Timer has no Dock icon, so it only shows up on the right of the menu bar. If the bar is crowded, macOS hides items that do not fit — widen the window you have focused, or remove another menu bar extra. Opening the app a second time will not create a second icon.

My bedtime did not start

A repeating bedtime only fires while Sleep Timer is running. Open Settings and turn on Launch at login so the app is there after a restart, and leave it running overnight.

The Mac slept while I was still watching

Set Heads-up before sleep to 10 minutes in Settings. A heads-up will then appear on top of fullscreen apps ten minutes out, with buttons to add fifteen or thirty minutes.

I want downloads to finish overnight

In Settings, change the end action from Sleep Mac to Turn display off. The screen goes dark at zero, and anything already running keeps going.

How do I stop a running timer?

Click the moon and press Cancel, right-click the menu bar icon and choose to cancel, or dismiss the heads-up with Cancel when it appears.

Where are my settings stored?

In macOS preferences on your Mac, under com.gjorge.sleeptimer. That covers the current timer, your presets, and your bedtimes. Nothing is sent anywhere, and deleting the app removes it.

Privacy

Sleep Timer collects nothing. There is no account, no analytics, and no network connection of any kind. Your current timer, your presets, and your bedtimes are written to macOS preferences on the Mac you are using and stay there.

To put the Mac to sleep, the app runs pmset, Apple's own power-management tool — the same sleep you get from the Apple menu. Turning the display off uses pmset too. Shutting down goes through System Events, and macOS may ask you to confirm.
